The village of Kangiqsualujjuaq is situated at the estuary of the George River which flows into Ungava Bay. North-East of the village is located Parc national Kuururjuaq, home to Quebec’s highest summit, Mount Iberville, located within the Torngat Mountains creased by the Koroc River. The community’s elders provided the information reproduced in this document which details their botanical knowledge in Inuktitut, French and English. The trilingual publication presents the names of the plants and the uses to which they are put by the region’s Inuit. This research has been sponsored during the studies leading to the creation of the Park.
About the author
A major interest of Alain Cuerrier, ethnobotanist and researcher at the Institut de recherche en biologie végétale of the Université de Montréal and at the Montreal Botanical Garden, is the traditional knowledge of the First Peoples and Inuit of northern Quebec. Thanks to financial support from the Kativik Regional Government and the help of the Avataq Cultural Institute, Alain Cuerrier has been able to visit Nunavik many times to learn from elders in numerous villages about the botanical knowledge of the area.
